Name: Kevin McKenna
Date of Birth: May 7, 1962 Place of Birth: Jersey City, NJ
Occupation: Information Technology Director
Hobbies: MX, woodworking, Basketball, track (running).
Reason for starting racing: I love the competition and they way it challenges you to push your limits.
Discipline competed in: Motocross
Goals for the Future: To keep learning and improving. Though I got a late start, I want to know how good I can be. And I’d sure like to finish in the front.
Role models/Most respected rider(s): Kevin Windham, John Dowd and of course my two very talented instructors Ronnie Stewart and Rich Schmidt.
Best part about racing: The nerves at the gate
Worst part about racing: The nerves at the gate!!!!
Sponsors (if any): None yet. But that’s not unusual for an old guy!

FAVORITE:
Food: Pizza (and it shows)
Color: Green… I know… it’s not a Kawi thing. I just like the color.
Type of machine: Honda and Suzuki 450’s
Track or race circuit: Lots of corners and tables.
Favorite sport apart from Motorcycle sports: Track 200m, 400m.

Experiences with Motovation Motocross Instruction:

When was your lesson? First lesson was back in late 2006.

Who taught you? The first lesson was with Rich Schmidt. But I have had lessons with both Rich and Ronnie Stewart since then.

Why did you take a lesson with Motovation? I needed to learn the proper way to ride and had heard that Motovation was offering lessons. After thinking about what I was going to get for the bike, it occurred to me that the best thing my bike could have is a rider that knew how to ride. A new pipe or some graphics weren’t going to do a thing if I had bad technique. Whatever I spend on lessons, it’s the best money I’ve ever spent on moto!

What were your expectations going in, and have you reached your goals? I think I had to be told which side the throttle was on. It was not an easy lesson for my poor instructor. More lessons followed with Rich and Ronnie. I’ve learned more than I can list here. Though I have a ways to go to reach my goals, Motovation has taken me very far from where I started. I’ve been able to race, and actually have some decent races. The lessons are fun and it’s remarkable how much they see and are able to “fix” with regard to my riding. After every lesson, I come away feeling like I improved and have more confidence. I’ve reached every goal I’ve set so far but I’m not done setting goals.

Where have you most improved since your lesson? Tough question since I’ve learned so much. But body position, cornering technique, hitting rutted corners and many other small details in riding technique have helped me improve a great deal.

How would you rate your overall experience, and would you recommend Motovation Motocross Instruction to a friend? My experience has been great. Both Rich and Ronnie see little things that I never would have been able to figure out. They’ve taught me to ride safely, but to the best of my abilities. Before you spend money on a pipe, titanium pegs or any of that stuff, spend it on improving your technique. It will make riding and racing so much more fun. And yes, I’d recommend Motovation to anyone who rides.

Who taught you? Both Ronnie Stewart and Rich Schmidt

Why did you take a lesson with Motovation? My dad made me… just kidding. I wanted to learn how to ride the right way. I really knew nothing about riding. Ronnie and Rich taught me from day one and I’ve learned a lot.

What were your expectations going in, and have you reached your goals? I wanted to learn how to ride correctly and safely. They’ve taught me both of those things. I’ve learned way more than I thought I ever would, but I still have a lot to learn.

Where have you most improved since your lesson? Everything really. Body position, cornering, jumping and knowing my limits.

How would you rate your overall experience, and would you recommend Motovation Motocross Instruction to a friend? It’s been awesome. And I always tell my friends the best way to learn is with Ronnie and Rich of Motovation.

Yesterday I had an awesome day of riding in Rocky Hill, Connecticut. My friend Mark took the ride up with me to get some valuable seat time on a different track. The track was really long and the corners where really fluid and wide. Throughout the day, lap after lap, I really felt like I was riding with great momentum and technique. On the gas with my elbows up in the corners, a local rider called me a “dirt shark”. I thought that was an interesting metaphor for being fast and aggressive. With some great practice sessions and recent race wins at the Hurricane Hills Ultimate Series, I feel like I am making progress and moving closer to my goals for the 2010 season. My first national will be High Point which is the third national on the tour. With my body and mind getting stronger, I am excited to get out there and put the number 606 in the main event at High Point!

As I make my way down to Full Travel Innovations (FTI) in North Carolina, I have nine hours of driving to think what exactly will be in store for me when I get down there and how I can use my short visit to my best advantage. Racing a Hare scramble in the Appalachian Mountains wasn’t quite on my list of things to do. When I arrived at Cal and Doreen’s house, (owners of FTI) they mentioned that they where going to this mountain challenge race in northern North Carolina. Cal was informing me just how physically challenging this two hour long race is. Right away my mind started spinning as I thought it would be really neat to try something new that I had never done before. When I told Cal and Doreen I would be interested in racing this event, they quickly offered me their dream woods bike, an RMZ 307, for me to race. It was absolutely an easy decision for me. That following Sunday, I found myself lined up, ready to race through the woods, four miles up and four miles down these unpredictable mountains. As I made my way through this challenging terrain, about half way through the race I hit a tree and put a hole in the right radiator of the bike. Unfortunately water cooled bikes need water to cool down the motor, so with no water to cool the bike down, the spark plug coil melted from being so hot and the bike quit running. All in all it was a great experience even though I didn’t get to finish the race. Maybe down the road I would consider another woods race, but for now I will stay away from those trees and keep it on the motocross track.

The moment of truth is when the thirty second board goes sideways, and you have between three to five seconds before the gate drops. Everything that happens after that is a demonstration of your preparation. Right now I am going through the preparation stages of getting back to one hundred percent, physically and mentally. Preparing everything necessary for me to compete is definitely not an easy task. I have to take a moment to thank everyone that has stepped in to help me prepare for 2010. If I was a professional boxer, I would have the world record for the most people in my corner. It is because of them, my friends and family, that I can go out there and compete at my maximum potential. Within the next few weeks, I will be training to get back in front of that thirty second board, and be ready to go the distance. Check back soon to find out when my first race will be, and how the outcome is.

Motovation was originated from my good friend Rich Schmidt. He has been a motocross instructor since 1993, and had a very successful professional racing career. It was an extremely easy decision when he approached me with the opportunity to join him as an instructor. Within the past four years, I have been making my mark as a motocross instructor, and just like my racing, I strive to be the best I can be. For me, educating others to ride better, safer, and faster is a gratifying experience. Check back in to learn more about my students and their experiences with motovation.

The sport of motocross often has its ups and downs; whether it be mentally, emotionally, or physically. This past fall, I suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in my right knee. It was much unexpected, but I guess all injuries are. My doctor did an awesome job fixing it through a four hour long surgery. For me, the road to recovery basically means building the strength back in my knee to be well enough to get back racing. Since my injury, I have put things in perspective and tried to remain positive. Through all of this, it made me realize that time away from racing isn’t always such a bad thing and could be beneficial in the long run. Check back soon, as I continue to work to rehabilitate my knee back to one hundred percent.
